A Black Book is one name for a witch’s book of magic, used to record spells, rites, symbolism, and workings. The Black Book of the Hagstone Witch is the grimoire for this website.
This is not my personal Black Book. It is a curated collection of ritual components, magical rites, magic theory, and spellcraft drawn from personal experience with and research on both formal and informal Traditional Witchcraft. The components I’ve included here are intended for adaptability. All of my personal gnosis, unique spirit contacts, private tools, and ritual frameworks have been intentionally removed or replaced with more accessible alternatives to make these workings useful to anyone, at any level, from any background. What remains in the Black Book is a functional core of Old-Style Traditional magical workings, provided as a free resource for curious witches.
The magic I work and the resources I create draw heavily from historical and folkloric research, as well as from my own experience in diasporic European familial folk practice. Much of the magical framework presented here is informed by various chapters of European history, anthropology, literature, and gender studies. The source material that informs this collection of practices includes folklore collections, historical texts, museum archives, and the surviving writings of witches and cunning folk active between the 12th and 20th centuries in various parts of Europe.
The Black Book is not a prescription of the “right way” to be a witch. It is part of a framework of Old-Style Traditional Witchcraft that is meant to inform and support others in following or building similar practices of their own.
