To Introduce Yourself to the Spirits & Seek an Initiator

This ritual is for those who feel called to start their journey into spirit-based or folkloric/tradition witchcraft and want to formally introduce themselves to the spirits. It is not an initiation; it is a personal rite of passage. It is a declaration of your intent to embark on a new path and an invitation to the Spirit Realm to offer guidance, companionship, and magical mentorship. This rite also involves going to a liminal place of power (such as a crossroads, forest, or graveyard[1]) to make yourself known to the spirits and open the way for an Initiator spirit to approach you. Such an entity may come as a guide, a teacher, or a challenger.

Preparation

Choose a place of power, such as a forest clearing, a wild crossroads, an abandoned churchyard, a hollow hill, or any liminal place where the veil feels thin to you (or is folklorically significant for its liminality). If you do not have a physical liminal place available to you or you cannot get to know, conjuring one is also an option.

Bring:

• An offering: bread, milk, fruit, a handwritten letter, or something else meaningful and appropriate to your practice. Make sure it is safe for the local environment and wildlife.

• (Optional) A symbolic item that represents traveling or seeking to be carried with you or worn on your person: a walking stick, lantern, candle, or an icon of a deity or saint associated with travel, witchcraft, or initiation.

Choose a time when you are unlikely to be disturbed. While nightfall, midnight, or dawn are commonly associated with magical rites, you should also consider your own safety, folklore, spiritual associations, and circumstances when selecting the best time for you.

The Rite

At the edge of your ritual space, stop and say aloud:

I come in shadow, I come in silence, I come in seeking.
Not with idle heart nor empty hands,
but with a question that burns within my bones.
Will you hear me? Will you find me?
Will you take my name into the dark?

Step forward, symbolizing your first step on the path to the Spirit Realm. On the ground before you, draw an equal-armed cross or an “X.” Stand or kneel before it, placing your hands on the earth. Say:

I mark this ground, and it marks me.
As hedge and thorn make way for the fox,
as the wind bends to the crow,
So, too, do I ask to pass through bramble and brush,
Unseen by the blind, yet known by the wise.
Let those who walk the path before me know my step.

Take a deep inhale and then exhale onto the earth, thinking of this breath as an offering, allowing the spirits to get to know you.

When you feel ready raise your hand in greeting and say:

I welcome you, Stranger in the Night, Keeper of Keys & Crossroads,
Watcher in the Witch’s Wood, Old One who walks behind my steps.
If I am seen, see me now! If I am known, know me now!
If I am worthy, let my name be taken into your mouth,
That I may be guided, tested, and taught!
Grant me your consideration,
And send me a sign of your acceptance.

Wait quietly. Be on the lookout for subtle changes: a shift in the wind, animal sounds, a flicker in the corner of your eye. If you feel accepted, speak your name aloud. If you wish to use a Craft name or adopt a new name for your practice, offer that name here (ex: “I was born and named ________, but I will answer when you call me _________.”)

Then say:

I walk the path of the Witch. I walk with open eyes.
I walk in light and shadow alike.
I am not made whole by church, nor king, nor altar,
But by the wild and the wind, the stone and the stream.
Not by law, nor claim, nor chain,
But by the cunning hand and the open eye.
This step I take, by root and thorn, by fire and night.

Leave your offering, announcing that you will wait for nine nights seeking signs from your prospective spirit mentor before you return. Then walk away without looking back. If possible, do not return to that space before the nine days are up. 

After the Ritual

Over the next nine nights, pay attention to your dreams, omens, signs, and readings for any indication of the presence or identity of an Initiator spirit. Spirits frequently respond in riddles, symbols, or subtle events that unfold over time.

If you receive a sign and wish to accept a spirit’s guidance, return to the place of power (or stand before a mirror, which serves as a liminal gate) and offer a token of acceptance, saying:

Not by priest nor holy writ,
But by thorn and flame, oath and whisper,
I take the hand that is offered.

Not by altar nor gilded crown,
But by the black earth, the hollow hill,
By the night-wind that calls my name.

By blood and breath, by bone and shadow,
I walk the path unseen,
Where the wise have walked before me.

Let the spirits bear witness,
Let the hidden doors open,
Let my name be known beyond the veil.

I accept your guidance with open eyes and steady hand,
From now until our paths diverge again.

If you are contacted by a spirit with whom you do not wish to partner, you may respectfully decline by leaving an offering in the same manner, saying:

I see you, and I know you, Spirit,
But my path is not yours to shape.

Not in scorn, nor in fear,
But by will and wisdom, I turn away.

As the river finds its own course,
As the fox walks its own trail,
So too must I walk mine.

Let there be no debt between us,
No chain, no binding word.
Go in peace, as I shall.

And if we meet again, let it be as strangers,
Each to our own road, each to our own fate.
